Ever Wonder How Your Rubbish Generates Electricity?

On Wednesday 26 August Locals Invited To Marchwood ERF - Lots to see and do for all ages On Wednesday 26 August, local residents will get a chance to go behind the scenes at Marchwood Energy Recovery Facility to find out how rubbish constantly generates electricity for the New Forest and Southampton.

Find out how your rubbish generates electricity

They will get the chance to find out what happens to all their rubbish at the open day, perfect for anyone who has ever ‘wondered’ about what happens after their bins are emptied.

Open to everyone, places on this always popular event should be booked in advance.  Email [email protected] or call 0203 567 6242 to book your places.  Families are welcome.

Tours of the facility are conducted by Richard Gledhill, facility manager and his team, which run throughout the day. Richard said: “The open day is a great way to find out what happens to your waste, behind the scenes of Marchwood’s Energy Recovery Facility.  I can promise it won’t be a rubbish day out!”

Visitors will go into the control room and see the fuel being loaded into hoppers for the furnace – up to two tonnes at a time.  They will also walk through the site and see where steam is generated, how the combustion gases are cleaned up, and explore the visitor centre. Visitors will also find out what happens to their recycling!

For any long-time residents of the area, we will also have a display of images from the construction of the Marchwood Power Station built in the 1950’s which burnt oil from Fawley. The modern Energy Recovery Facility stands on part of the original site, continuing a long history of electricity generation for the area.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to your waste, or just want to see how green electricity produced from our household waste, this is the day out for you! Email [email protected] or call 0203 567 6242 to book your places.
