Pioneering plastics recovery
Our plastics sorting facility in Rainham, Essex uses hi-tech equipment to sort up to nine polymers and colours.
If every local authority across the UK adopted mixed plastic recycling, we could save over 300,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, the equivalent of removing approximately 75,000 cars off the road per year. However the UK as a whole is currently only collecting around 180,000 tonnes of plastic bottles per annum, which represents around 30% of the estimated 550,000 tonnes that enter the waste stream every year.

Our challenge was to develop a plastics recovery facility (PRF) able to separate plastics by polymer and colour types, as well as having the capability to adapt to different plastics in the future.
This facility means that we are now able to:
- Close the loop to achieve a market leading end product for reprocessing materials back into plastic products, feeding the circular economy
- Increase mixed plastics recycling to encourage local authorities to introduce this service to residents by providing a purpose-built facility that makes it straightforward
- Reduce carbon emissions by reprocessing the sorted material, the use of virgin materials is avoided contributing to significantly reduced emissions.
