Message in a bottle from Sheffield

Veolia and Sheffield City Council are calling on residents to recycle more plastic bottles following news that - we only recycle HALF of the ones we use.

You might assume that these days, plastic bottles are one of the most commoly recycled items - but you'd be wrong!  According to Sheffield City Council, of the 480 plastic bottles used annually by the average household, only 270 are recycled.  This means that a staggering 44% are still being put in rubbish bins.

With this in mind, we are encouraging residents to 'go green' and recycle all plastic bottles from around their homes.  For instance, if every household in Sheffield recycled one more shampoo bottle a year it would save enough energy to toast over 51,000 loaves of bread!  And recycling plastic bottles couldn't be easier - just pop them in your blue bin or box.

We know that a lot of people are recycling their plastic bottles a lot of the time, but these figures clearly show there's much more that we could be doing.  Some people may not realise how much of a difference they can make by recycling something as simple as a plastic bottle, let alone 210 extra ones a year.  But plastic bottles can be transformed again and again into, not just plastic bottles, but a huge range of items, including: football shirts, fleece clothing and bedding and picnic benches.  And we haven't even mentioned how much better it is for the environment to recycle plastic and give it a second life rather than wasting it!

So, be fantastic with your plastic and recycle every time!
