Southwark - Integrated Waste Management Facility

Our innovative facility in Southwark is a model for what sustainable waste management should be. The waste and recycling brought on site is further processed and turned into a new resource.

Materials Recovery Facility

The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is one of the most advanced recycling facilities in Europe. All materials collected as recycling from homes across the borough are processed at this plant before being sent off to manufacturers to turn the recycled materials into new products. This is where we sort and separate mixed materials collected for recycling such as paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, steel and aluminium cans.

Mechanical Biological Treatment

The Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant processes rubbish collected from households across the borough. It uses a combination of mechanical and biological processes to sort the waste. The mechanical process separates some recyclable materials from the mixed waste, such as metals or glass. The biological process removes moisture from the waste before breaking down the organic components by way of a composting-like process to create fuel for energy recovery which is sent to our SELCHP Energy Recovery Facility.
