Anaerobic digestion

Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion is a technology that transforms food waste and liquid effluents into energy and fertilisers.

In the UK Veolia operates more than 10 Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants for liquid effluents on industrial sites, including key customers such as Heineken and Diageo.

We also have reliable and established relationships with all of the major AD food waste operators due to the large volumes of materials that we manage on behalf of municipal and industrial customers (in excess of 400,000 tpa of biowastes per year). This allows us to secure capacity and competitive gate fees and provide a reliable service.

In addition, Veolia is the appointed operator of the largest biogas to grid plant in the UK in North Yorkshire with a total capacity of 55,000 tonnes per year (Leeming Biogas).

Veolia also owns and operates a state of the art depackaging plant in Sheffield converting heavily packaged food waste into a renewable fuel which feeds several anaerobic digestion plants.

Veolia, through its Organics Recycling division, is involved in the landspreding of biosolids and digestates to land, closing the loop on carbon and nutrients. We have developed our own brand and range of growing media materials (www.pro-grow.com)  as part of our circular economy strategy to help customers to transform waste into a resource.

Veolia through other business units in Europe has extensive experience in the collection and treatment of food waste with key flagship facilities in Sydney (Australia) which transforms biogas into energy and heat via CHP; Rosktock (Germany) – which upgrades the biogas for direct injection into the grid; and Lille (France) – which transforms the biogas into a transport fuel for the local bus fleet.

Composting
We operate a number of centralised composting schemes that turn waste into an organic peat-free soil conditioner and other products.

Nutrient Recovery push
We recycle many different forms of biosolids such as dried pellets, digested cake, all types of water/wastewater sludges and more.

Food waste collection
We offer a wide range of bin options and collection frequencies to suit the particular needs of the customer based on the space available.
