Reopening the Household Recycling Centres

We are working hard to ensure Birmingham is kept as clean and safe as possible and have decided to reopen the city’s network of five household waste recycling centres.

To ensure the safety of the public and our staff, we are opening for essential use only.  This is for residents who have a problem with storing too much waste or have oils or other hazardous waste at home.  Please think carefully before you decide to visit the site.  Non-essential use puts yourself, other members of the public and our staff at risk from spreading the infection.

Rules for visiting our sites

We remind you to please think carefully before you decide to visit the site.  Non-essential use puts yourself, other members of the public and our staff at risk from spreading the infection.

Generally, we are operating with the following rules, specific site rules follow underneath. This is to ensure the safety of both the public and our staff. Please ensure you read and follow this guidance when visiting any of our sites:

  • Use the car you have booked with
  • Anyone in self-isolation or with COVID-19 symptoms must NOT visit under any circumstances
  • You MUST be a Birmingham resident (i.e. you pay your council tax to Birmingham City Council) and produce address documentation and photo ID with you
  • Access will be by car only, strictly no pedestrians allowed
  • No vans or trailers permitted access on site
  • You should only visit sites if it is absolutely necessary e.g. if bulky items stored at home represent a health and safety risk
  • Respect fair use, households are restricted to 1 booking a week
  • The number of vehicles on-site will be restricted and cars should be driver-only where possible
  • You must NOT leave your car until it is parked in a bay
  • Keep your windows closed
  • Social distancing at 2m will be strictly enforced
  • Operatives CANNOT assist the public due to social distancing
  • The number of vehicles on-site will be restricted and cars should be driver-only where possible
  • Only ONE person will be allowed on a gantry at a time - understand that an additional person can only get out the car to help unload heavy items and when told to
  • Not bring more than eight 25kg bags (or equivalent) of inert waste, such as rubble or soil, turf, hardcore per visit
  • Lone parents and Blue Badge holders - only one adult to exit the car when on site. All other passengers must remain in the car with seatbelts fastened

What to expect when you arrive on site

There will be uniformed staff at the gates to manage traffic.  Please listen and follow their instructions.  They are there to help you and make sure you stay safe and can complete your trip in as quick a time as possible.  But please remember the extra guidelines in place will cause delays and we ask you to be patient.  Our staff are working hard in difficult circumstances to keep this site operating. Please treat our staff with respect at all times.

What we are doing in response to Covid-19

Please be assured we take our responsibility to your health and safety and that of our staff very seriously.  We will be cleaning handrails regularly and in addition, will be closing the site at certain times to allow for thorough cleaning.  Our operatives are following Government and industry guidance on personal hygiene.

Restrictions

Birmingham’s recycling centres cannot accept business or trade waste.  For example, waste from a builder or other tradesman carrying out work to a house they don't live in; waste from the landlord of a property, or someone offering to clear any rubbish from a house which isn’t their own.

The extra traffic and waste created by businesses illegally tipping waste at these sites add to site congestion and inconveniences local people seeking to dispose of legitimate household waste at a time of increased need.

Veolia operates all five Household Recycling Centres in Birmingham,  enabling residents to dispose of their household waste and recyclable items. The Household Recycling Centres take a wide range of items and they’re really useful for waste that can’t be recycled or disposed of via residential collection services or bring banks.

Please ensure that before you visit, you have separated your waste by material type. This will help us to recycle more of your waste, make your visit as speedy as possible and will avoid delays for yourself and others.
