Don’t let your recycling go up in smoke!

Make use of all your recycling services

With Bonfire Night on its way, Veolia and Haringey Council are reminding all residents to ensure they only put the correct items for recycling in their recycling bins.

Paper and card (that is not stained by food), and clean and empty plastic bottles, tubs and trays, glass bottles and jars, tins and cans, and food and drink cartons can all be placed in a recycling bin, along with empty aerosols and clean tin foil.

All food waste, including leftovers, raw or uncooked food, bones and carcasses, fruit and vegetable peelings and tea bags and coffee grounds should all be placed in the food waste bin.

Liquids, nappies, polystyrene, plastic film or wrapping, black bags and medical waste should all be disposed of in the general waste bin.

Paul Peters, Veolia’s Senior Contract Manager in Haringey, said: “It is vitally important that residents separate their waste into the correct bins. It is such a shame to see the efforts to recycle of so many residents go to waste when some people place the wrong items into their recycling bins, as it means the whole load that has been collected cannot be recycled and instead has to be burnt.  If anyone is in doubt as to whether they can recycle a certain item they should leave it out of their recycling bin, or better still contact the Veolia Contact Centre to be given the correct information.”

Cllr Peray Ahmet, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “Please remember to separate your pumpkins from your plastics this Bonfire Night to ensure that only the correct items are being recycled. Recycling rates in Haringey are much improved thanks to the ongoing commitment shown by our residents and businesses but putting the wrong items in the recycling bin can have a huge impact on the amount of waste that can be recycled successfully. Don’t have all your hard work go up in smoke by putting the wrong items in the recycling bin!”
