Veolia Haringey schools workshop making paper

Helpful hints to reduce, re-use and recycle in Haringey

Here are some helpful hints to help you and your pupils become Waste Warriors; on a mission to reduce, re-use and recycle as much as possible, both in school and at home.

Reduce

  • Set your printers and photocopiers to print double-sided as part of the default settings
  • Challenge pupils to bring waste-free packed lunches into school, by avoiding non-reusable and non-recyclable packaging
  • Avoid duplicating letters to parents and carers by sending one per family, not one per pupil
  • Get in touch with your free fruit provider to ensure they don't deliver more than pupils can eat

Re-use

  • Encourage pupils to use refillable bottles or flasks for water, rather than repeatedly buying mineral water
  • Set up a scrap paper drawer in every classroom and make sure both sides of a piece of paper are used before being recycled
  • Hold junk art challenges where pupils make use of coloured card off-cuts, textiles and plastic containers to produce eye-catching models
  • Use yoghurt pots and biscuit tins to store paintbrushes, pencils, scissors and glue
  • Run second-hand uniform sales or book swaps in school

Recycle

You can recycle the following materials at your school in the weekly Haringey schools recycling service:

  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic bottles and carrier bags
  • Food tins, drink cans and aerosols
  • Food and drink cartons
  • Plastic containers and food trays
