Who We Are

Veolia is working with Leeds City Council to find the best practical and environmentally responsible way to deal with the rubbish that we create, and to encourage people not to create so much in the first place.

Veolia in Leeds

Veolia and Leeds City Council work in partnership to manage black bin household waste in the city, increase recycling rates and produce energy from waste.

In 2012, Veolia were awarded a 25 year PFI contract to build and operate the Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility (RERF) on the Cross Green Industrial Estate in East Leeds.

The RERF, which became fully operational in April 2016, now manages all of Leeds black bin rubbish and can manage up to 214,000 tonnes of waste per year. The state-of the-art facility separates and sorts out recyclable materials such as plastics, ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals and paper/card.

The remaining waste is then burnt under tightly controlled conditions to produce energy. The RERF provides enough electricity to continuously power 22,000 homes via the National Grid.
