Ireland Wood Primary School are having a double celebration as they are the proud winners of a local competition that gave young people the chance to write and produce their own radio commercial.

Recycle Week takes place each June and this year is the tenth anniversary. Here in Leeds we have lots to celebrate as the city continues to increase its annual recycling rate which now stands at 40.2% per cent up from 11% in 2003.
Ireland Wood’s submissions beat off competition from schools across the Leeds area and on Monday students will be presented with a Gold Disc in recognition of their innovative and creative work.

Ian Blackburn Head Teacher of Ireland Wood Primary School said ‘The students really enjoyed getting involved in the competition and it was a great way for them to learn more about the environment and how they can influence people to be greener and be more committed to improving the local environment.

Councillor Dunn said “Recycling Week is about celebrating our collective achievements and promoting ways in which we can build on this success. It’s very fitting that we’re presenting an award to young people who are already committed to delivering a cleaner and greener city.’ He added ‘I congratulate them on their excellent work and I hope it will inspire young people to get involved in the green agenda.’

The winning submission will now be made into a professionally styled radio advert that will be used to promote recycling in schools across the country.
Recycle Week 2013 is taking place from 17–23 June and in Leeds, we are focusing on encouraging residents to pass on reusable items that they no long want to family, friends or local charities and celebrating the city’s achievements in improving recycling.
