Supporting community initiatives in Leeds

The Community Benefit Fund was set up to help support initiatives in the local community and ensure that residents benefit directly from Veolia’s operations in Leeds. The fund supports local community projects that provide the greatest sustainable benefits to the Leeds community.

Helping Residents Bring Colour To Saxton Garden

The residents of Saxton Gardens are rightly proud of their local community but felt that they needed a bit of colour to their green areas. Veolia have funded new planters, gardening tools and seeds so that all local residents can take part in this gardening initiative and brighten up their neighbourhood.
Pearl McArdle, Chair of Saxton Gardens Residents Committee said ‘It’s good to see that local businesses like Veolia take a positive interest in the local community and we’re really grateful to them for taking the time to visit us and to help fund this community benefit’.

Grubs Up For Bangladeshi Older Residents

The Bangladeshi Community Centre is an important community hub for many residents in East Leeds. Elderly residents enjoy a regular weekly luncheon club which encourages residents to come out of their homes and socialise. Veolia provided £150 of funding to pay for ingredients to help volunteer chefs provide a range of healthy meals from local producers. The initiative supports a healthy diet and promotes a healthy lifestyle with residents who take part the luncheon club.

Kevin Parker, Regional Communications Manager, Veolia said ‘It’s great to see members of the local community coming together to socialise and enjoy quality nutritious food. He added ‘We support the national Love Food Hate Waste agenda and this is an excellent example of sourcing local ingredients and ensuring that nothing is wasted’.

Veolia Staff working the land at Skelton Grange

Veolia is committed to supporting local communities through workforce volunteering. In Leeds our local contract staff  have forged links with Skelton Grange Environment Centre and in December they got their hands dirty by clearing space to create outdoor class room spaces where children can learn about their local environment and the importance of the local eco system.

Paul Fowler General Manager Veolia Leeds said ‘This is the first of many volunteering opportunities that we’ll be supporting in the Leeds area. We’re very keen to develop a reputation for being a good neighbour and a key stakeholder in the local community. He added  ‘Once our Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility is operational we will ensure that  our workforce are encouraged to volunteer in the community and develop long term partnerships with organisations like Skelton Grange.
