London - Health and Safety

Treating Health & Safety as the number one priority

At Veolia, we treat the Health & Safety of all our staff as the number one priority. In this most hazardous of industries, we know it is vital that our procedures are of the highest possible standards to minimise and, where possible, obliterate risk.

Of course, accidents do happen, but we strive to ensure all our staff are presented with the best possible advice and training techniques, from manual handling best practice to getting in and out of vehicles correctly, to working in the streets in and around traffic and pedestrians.

2020 Objective

Veolia's objective UK wide is to achieve an occupational accident frequency rate of less than or equal to 6.5. The accident frequency rate is the number of accidents per million hours worked and is the Group’s preferred indicator.

2017 Performance

The accident frequency rate (number of accidents per million hours worked) was 9.55 in 2017. The severity rate (number of days lost per thousand hours worked) was 0.55.

In 2017, the number of employees trained in safety reached 94,552, and the number of bodies dedicated to or including the study of health and safety issues was 1935, as against 1888 in 2016.

However, our customers and the residents we serve can play their part too by following these simple guidelines:

  1. - Ensure your bags and bins are in the correct place on collection day.
  2. - Don't Overload your bags or bins.
  3. - Use dedicated disposal services for discarded syringes and other clinical waste.
  4. - Wrap broken glass and sharp objects in paper or bags.

In London, we are pioneering several initiatives to help work towards our common goals of zero accidents and ensuring everybody leaves work at the end of each day in the same health as when they arrived.
