Lister Hospital

The Lister is a 730 bed acute hospital in Stevenage and is part of the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. It offers general and specialist hospital services for people across much of Hertfordshire and South Bedfordshire and provides a full range of medical and surgical specialties.

The challenge

In hospitals the focus is on the quality of services provided to patients. To support patient care Lister Hospital runs large, complex and energy hungry facilities so wanted to make sure that it significantly reduced the cost of generating electricity and heat to meet its carbon emissions reduction target.

The solution

Working in partnership with Veolia, a complete refurbishment of the energy plant was designed and commissioned to upgrade the 40-year old energy centre via a 15-year Contract Energy Management contract. This also provides 24/7 operation and maintenance and risk transfer.

The £2.7 million upgrade of the energy centre included a 1.4MWe Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and three new boilers; delivering low carbon heating, hot water, electricity and a low energy lighting system for the hospital.

The results

Veolia helped the Trust meet its carbon emissions reduction target three years early. By working with Veolia the Trust has achieved recognition by winning the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM) Sustainability Award and gained associated healthcare press coverage.

  • Saves load on the National Grid
  • Cuts CO2 emissions by 4,040 tonnes per year
  • Clearance of a £1.3 million repairs backlog for the heating and hot water systems
  • Improved the patient experience through replacement of 3,811 light fittings
  • Helps future hospital building developments achieve BREEAM at level of excellent
  • Less exposure to electricity price fluctuations

Energy bills will be reduced by an estimated £0.65 million annually

Carbon emissions cut by nearly 20% - significantly more than the Department of Health’s 10% 2015 target

Generates 12.3GWh of low carbon electricity per year

“I am proud to be part of these significant infrastructure projects which have been delivered on an existing acute hospital site with no significant downtime on any service. This successful partnership approach unleashed immediate savings, allowing us to address £1.3 million in backlog maintenance. At a time when the trust has had to make considerable financial savings, whilst maintaining high quality clinical care, this project really does tick all the boxes.”
