Neath Port Talbot Hospital

Neath Port Talbot Hospital, part of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Board, was constructed under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to provide modern facilities that replaced two older hospitals in South Wales. Officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales, the 270-bed hospital provides a full range of medical services to the local community and includes a mental health unit.

The Challenge

To maintain the patient care environment hospitals need a wide ranging estates service that can provide essential specialist support to maintain the healthcare facilities.

The Solution

The agreement with Veolia ensures the hospital has a wide range of mechanical, electrical, energy, utility, grounds and waste services provided by a dedicated on-site team.

The 15-strong on site Veolia team provide 24-hour cover for a range of mechanical and electrical services including CCTV, lifts, emergency generation and electrical supplies, chillers, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), access control, lighting, medical furniture, compressed air and medical gas supplies.

The team is also responsible for building fabric maintenance, fire alarms, protection and monitoring. Utilities managed under the contract include gas, electricity and hot and cold water supplies.

Effective control of the site’s energy is handled by the team using building energy management systems, monitoring and
targeting software. This allows accurate consumption targeting and reporting. Veolia also liaises with the Environment Agency, on behalf of the hospital, for environmental reporting covering fossil fuel burning, noise, site tidiness and correct use of drains.

The modern Hospital building has extensive landscaped grounds with ornamental ponds designed to create a good patient care environment. Included in the on-site team are the specialist skills to ensure the building fabric and the grounds are maintained (including vermin control).

Handling and disposal of all types of waste is carried out by Veolia via a special waste transfer station that handles around 46 tonnes of waste a month and around 205 tonnes of clinical waste per annum.
