Dalkia - Lister Hospital

£2.8million energy centre upgrade for Lister Hospital

Lister Hospital offers general and specialist services for patients across much of Hertfordshire and south Bedfordshire in addition to a full range of medical and surgical specialties.

For hospitals, it is vital that the best possible service is provided and for this, it is important that the healthcare establishment can easily maintain complex infrastructures so that their focus can be placed on their service delivery. In addition, new environmental targets and energy legislation mean that resources and often investment are vital to enable hospitals to benefit from modern energy-efficient technologies.

Dalkia, the energy and utilities management specialist, boasts over 80 years experience within the healthcare sector. The provider now helps more than 100 hospitals throughout the UK to meet carbon reduction strategies and reduce costs.

Lister Hospital's contract with Dalkia has provided a £2.8million energy centre upgrade, which includes a 1.4Mwe CHP unit delivered through Dalkia's specialist CHP division, Cogenco. Furthermore, the contract has also included three new boilers. This new upgrade supplies the hospital with heating, hot water and electricity.

Both the Sustainability Strategy (2010) and the Sustainable Development Management Plan (2010) decided the upgraded CHP could be used as a strategic measure in order to reach the carbon reduction agenda. Lister's new CHP system will lower the East and North NHS Hertfordshire NHS Trust's carbon emissions by nearly 20%, exceeding the standard 10% reduction target set by the Department of Health for NHS organisations to achieve by 2015. With such a large cut in energy expenditure, the Trust will make unitary monthly payments to Dalkia, funded from the energy savings achieved by the plant installation and usage.

The new energy centre is maintained 24/7 by Dalkia's local mobile teams and will save the hospital more than 4,000 tonnes of CO2.

Stephen McPartland MP commented: " This is a great partnership between Dalkia and the Trust - it will save around £500,000 per year and save carbon which contributes towards the carbon savings target".
