Environmental Permit Application Granted at Ellesmere Port

Permit allows treatment of low-level radioactive waste

Veolia Environmental Services has been granted an Environmental Permit by the Environment Agency to treat Low Level Radioactive Waste (LLW) at the company’s Ellesmere Port High Temperature Incinerator (HTI).

The new permit allows the treatment of materials that are physically and chemically the same as other wastes currently treated at the facility however these are lightly contaminated with radioactive materials from establishments such as hospitals and industry.

The company expects to accept up to 1,000 tonnes of LLW per annum which is around 1% of the HTI’s capacity.

Sarah Moseley, Veolia Environmental Services’ Director – Hazardous Waste Services, said:

“We are pleased to confirm that we have been granted an Environmental Permit from the Environment Agency for the controlled handling of low level radioactive waste at our Ellesmere Port facility.

“This material will be treated in line with the permit’s stringent environmental requirements.  Our facility is designed for the safe handling of hazardous waste with all emissions controlled and monitored to ensure they are within permitted limits.”

The company is the lead sponsor of the 2013 LLW Conference at the Rheged Centre, Penrith, Cumbria on 2 May.
