Mansfield MRF shortlisted for Chartered Institution of Wastes Management award
The Mansfield MRF was one of only three British waste facilities that were shortlisted for the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management’s PEEL Peoples’ Cup award. This popular category in the Institution’s annual Professional Awards recognises excellence in the operating team of a waste management facility. This year, there were over 90 entries from all over the UK.
The Mansfield MRF is where recyclables from Nottinghamshire households (excluding the city of Nottingham) such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans are sent to be sorted and baled before being sent on to reprocessing factories where they are recycled and made into new items. The £14m state-of-the-art facility has been operational January 2009; and in that time it has already contributed significantly to raising Nottinghamshire’s household recycling rates.
The MRF has also proven to be a fantastic educational and awareness-raising resource. The highly popular interactive education and visitors centre has welcomed hundreds of visitors from all over Nottinghamshire. The MRF has helped to educate local residents of all ages and backgrounds about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling our waste, to ensure that Nottinghamshire becomes a greener, more sustainable county.
Terry March, President of the CIWM visited the MRF in August to carry out the PEEL Peoples’ Cup judging session. “I was very impressed with the whole operation and the approach of the management staff, with their tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm.” He says. “Receiving a ‘highly commended’ certificate is an outstanding achievement and something that Veolia Environmental Services Nottinghamshire should be really proud of.”

The winner of the PEEL Peoples’ Cup was announced at the CIWM Professional Awards ceremony on Wednesday 20 October, at Lords Cricket Ground, London.
