Veolia and Foodbank: Working together to combat hidden hunger

Volunteers from Veolia joined forces with Foodbank to combat hidden hunger in Liverpool

Run by churches throughout South Liverpool, the Foodbank is part of a national network providing stores of non-perishable food donated by communities for communities! The eager volunteers joined together in convoy to collect Harvest Festival donations amassed by local schools and churches. Filling up their cars they transported the supplies to a storage unit where they then organised them by type, date-labelled, boxed and weighed them ready to be given out.

The Foodbank provides a great source of support and aims to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable people who unexpectedly find themselves unable to feed their families. It also helps people break the cycle of poverty by connecting them with agencies that can offer practical assistance and emotional support to help restore dignity and revive hope.

South Liverpool Foodbank Co-ordinator, Nicola Hawkes said: “Poverty can happen to anyone at any time and since our launch this Foodbank has fed more than 3000 people in food crisis! The success of any Foodbank depends on the commitment of enthusiastic volunteers and partnerships with local organisations of all kinds: businesses, churches, schools and voluntary groups.”

Morgan Toner, Managing Director for Veolia Hazardous Waste Services added: “We pride ourselves on being a good neighbour and actively encourage our employees to support worthy causes. We want to make a real difference in the communities where we operate so we were delighted to be able to help Foodbank in its campaign to combat hidden hunger.”

Veolia is passionate about giving something back to the communities where it lives and works. As part of its half day volunteering programme last year staff gave over 11,000 hours of volunteering time to support community projects across the UK.
