Presented with the award at a ceremony in Porchester Hall, London, on 15 July 2015 the 2degrees Champions Awards recognise the individuals and companies driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of sustainable business. Unlike other awards that are judged by a guest panel, the 2degrees Champions are decided by peers.
Estelle won the award following the launch of Veolia’s successful ‘Resourcing the World’ strategy that has transformed what used to be one of the UK’s largest waste, water and energy companies into a resource management leader.
The 14,000 strong company has driven corporate responsibility and sustainability performance by becoming a manufacturer of green products and renewable energy, reducing dependency on natural resources for itself and its customers, creating new revenue streams and opening up new markets.
Estelle Brachlianoff, Senior Executive Vice President of Veolia UK and Ireland said: “We are addressing the biggest single issue our planet faces, namely the lack of resources to meet the needs of the 7.2 billion people living here now, let alone the forecast 9.6 billion by 2050. It’s how we influence others that will make the real difference if the planet is going to have sufficient capacity for all our needs.
“As a leading global resource management provider, we know the take-make-dispose model is dead – so we are promoting the circular economy in a move which makes business sense for customers. By recovering palladium from street sweepings, transforming sludge into plastic, generating green energy or decommissioning a North Sea oil platform, we are now turning a once 'traditional' industry into the standard-bearer for the circular economy.”
Estelle Brachlianoff, who became CEO of Veolia UK & Ireland in 2012 has led the charge in helping businesses and local authorities meet their sustainability and performance targets. Over the last year Estelle has led the company to the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, the UK’s highest accolade for business success and was also awarded the CBI’s’ First Women Business of the Year’ Award in 2014.
