Veolia delivers energy efficiency to Haringey's award winning housing development with CHP

Low carbon heating and hot water for the Cannon Road development in Haringey

Global resource management company, Veolia, is now advancing sustainability for London’s new communities by delivering low carbon energy, through district heating, for the Cannon Road development in Haringey. By managing energy-efficient heating and hot water from the new combined heat and power (CHP) based scheme it will save around 6,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions – equivalent to removing 4,200 cars from the streets of the city. The success of this development was recently recognised by winning the Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development Award in the Building Excellence Awards 2016.

Part of the wider regeneration of North Tottenham, London, this development is being delivered by the 8,000-home Newlon Housing Trust. As part of the energy management contract, Veolia delivers low carbon affordable heat to the homes located in four modern blocks and a 22-storey tower, together with a new 420-pupil school serving reception and primary school children which was also named as a finalist for Best Educational Building.

Designed to help foster the new community the development includes a variety of different properties available for shared ownership, social rent and intermediate rent, which provides affordable accommodation for key workers.

Under the contract Veolia manages the energy delivery to the residents which ensures the apartments are energy efficient and comply with the latest guidelines for sustainable homes. Under the scheme the company also manages a seamless billing system which enables the energy centre operators to interact with the customer through a messaging facility.

Commenting on this latest district heating scheme Chief Operating Officer - Industrial Customers, Kevin Hurst said “New homes with affordable energy are essential to support our communities. By delivering their home energy needs using district heating we can ensure they benefit from improved comfort and lower costs.

At the same time this produces sustainable power, lowers demand on the National Grid and reduces carbon emissions, and moves us a step closer to being a smart city.”

Modern CHP technology effectively harnesses the heat produced as part of the electricity generation process making it more than twice as energy efficient as separate grid generation. Already taking a leading global role for district heating networks Veolia now manages over 30 CHP based schemes in London.
