Veolia to provide recycling services to over 120 Race for Life events

Global resource management company Veolia has extended its service to Cancer Research UK by providing the recycling services for over 120 Race for Life events between May and October. The service will see distribution, collection and processing of the bins at the venues where the 5km, 10km, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon, Marathon and Hiking events take place. With thousands competing the Veolia team will mobilise to meet the needs of these events taking place across the UK, and this additional voluntary support backs the collection and recycling contract that covers over 600 Cancer Research UK shops across the country.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is a series of fun and inspiring women-only events raising money for research into beating all types of cancer affecting men, women and children. Started in 1994 Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series and every year, women of all ages and abilities raise money to help fund Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Volunteers play a vital part in the success of all Race for Life events and as well as managing all the waste services Veolia’s teams are also playing their part in the events, either directly as participants or as part of volunteer support teams. This also further emphasises Veolia’s wider corporate responsibility activities following the achievement of becoming Business in the Community's Responsible Business of the Year 2016.

The materials expected from these events will mainly consist of plastic bags, plastic bottles and food packaging and once all of the waste has been collected and the recyclable waste separated, the remaining waste will be converted into low carbon energy to maintain sustainability.

Adding his support Gavin Graveson, Veolia’s Chief Operating Officer Public and Commercial said, “Cancer Research UK is really making a difference to people’s lives and we are pleased that our teams can help to make these events a success, through our support services, volunteering and by participating. I hope everyone enjoys the events while they raise money for this valuable cause.”
