Delivering zero waste to landfill for ASDA
Veolia will also be responsible for the recycling of all cardboard generated by ASDA stores and depots across the UK.
The two companies will work together on various initiatives to achieve zero waste to landfill, including using Anaerobic Digestion for food waste and the implementation of ASDA Colleague Recycling, allowing store and depot colleagues to recycle plastic bottles, cans and office paper. The remaining residual waste will be sent to Energy Recovery Facilities.
The awarding of the cardboard contract demonstrates ASDA’s confidence in Veolia’s ability to deliver added value and excellent customer service. Veolia will work with ASDA to minimise the contamination of cardboard across its store network and drive cardboard recycling rates.
The partnership between the two organisations has seen Veolia representatives seconded to ASDA to help develop and deliver their waste minimisation programme, which aims to improve efficiencies and minimise exposure to increasing landfill tax costs. As part of ASDA’s Carbon Strategy the diversion of waste to landfill will also significantly reduce ASDA’s overall carbon footprint.
Paul Kelly, ASDA’s External Affairs and Corporate Responsibility Director, said: “Our partnership with Veolia moves us one step closer to achieving our aspiration of sending zero waste to landfill. By reducing, recycling, and reusing all of the materials from our stores, depots, and head offices, we will be able to divert almost 200,000 tonnes of waste each year.
