Whitbread and Veolia Environmental Services win Climate Week Award

25 march 2011
Whitbread, the UK’s largest hospitality company has partnered with Veolia Environmental Services, the UK’s leading recycling and waste company to win the Best Initiative for Large Business at the Climate Week Awards for its innovative landfill diversion initiative. The award was presented on March 21 at Lancaster House, London to Paul Jackson, Veolia’s Operations Director and Alexandra Glenn, Procurement Manager, Whitbread.

Whitbread’s landfill diversion from its 590 Premier Inns and restaurant locations increased dramatically from 49% to 66% between November 2009 and January 2011. The overall objective is to achieve 80% landfill diversion by February 2012 substantially reducing carbon emissions and reflecting customer preferences.

There are three strands to the strategy:

• A food waste recycling service has been rolled out to over 70% of the estate that generates food waste.  The diversion of food waste on this scale to appropriate treatment facilities is a first for the hospitality industry
• Veolia has introduced a mixed recyclates service at 353 sites which combines paper, card, plastic and tins
• Diversion of residual waste to Energy Recovery Facilities from 30% of the Whitbread estate to generate electricity for the National Grid.

Alexandra Glenn, Procurement Manager for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants said: “Whitbread are leading the hospitality industry’s drive towards improving sustainable performance.  We aim to divert  80% of waste from landfill from our hotels and restaurants by February 2012 and our integrated approach working with Veolia is making this possible.”

Jean Dominique Mallet, Chief Executive Officer, Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Plc, added, “We are delighted to win this award which highlights the importance of the expanding food waste recycling sector. Exploring its potential with Whitbread has allowed us to offer the same service to other local businesses – a win-win for all the parties concerned and the environment.”
