Quick, responsible and discreet removal of Marine Waste

After weeks at sea, all your ship’s waste needs to be removed and fresh supplies loaded on board within a matter of hours. Our marine waste services can remove it quickly, responsibly and discreetly - even with the tightest of turnarounds.

How we can help

Veolia provides waste disposal services from some of the world’s largest ocean-going liners, major shipping companies, and ports. Our marine treatment facility in Marchwood, Hampshire, has been designed and built to handle hazardous and non-hazardous marine wastes from cruise ships, container ships, and car carriers. It comprises quay-side access for two working barges, a dedicated marine vehicle fleet, a fully-permitted hazardous waste transfer station, and a specialist oil recovery plant.

Our MARPOL reception operates to the highest health, safety, and environmental standards, with technical support to ensure you comply fully with strict marine waste legislation. The facility has the capacity to collect, treat, store and dispose of more than 2,000 tonnes of waste. We can tailor our services to your exact needs, working to your deadlines and any limited access issues to provide reliable and efficient waste collections, 24 hours a day.

We are licensed by the UK Environment Agency and certificated with the ISO 9001 Quality Assurance Management System for marine waste management.

How do we create value for you?

Our purpose-built waste barges, Seagreen and Seahorse, are capable of carrying 320 tonnes of bulk liquid waste and 100 tonnes of deck cargo. This means we can collect large volumes of waste out of sight of passengers while they disembark or board, helping to create a positive passenger experience. Large offloads, such as furniture and mattresses, can be handled at short notice, minimising any activity on the quayside during busy turnarounds.

We can also promise you a complete zero waste to landfill service that is unique in the shipping industry. By disposing of all your waste in the most appropriate and responsible way, you’ll make significant cost and carbon savings, at the same time as maintaining strict adherence to MARPOL legislation.

What happens to your waste?

When your waste arrives at our Marchwood facility, it is analyzed for hazardous components. Paper, cardboard, and mixed plastic is sent to our recycling plant in Portsmouth. General and catering waste is sent to our adjacent energy recovery facility where it is incinerated to create green electricity that is then exported to the National Grid.

Waste oil is pumped to the shore where it is separated from the water and tested for quality. The recovered oil can then be reused as an industrial fuel. Wastewater is treated through the onsite biological treatment plant before being discharged into the sewerage system.
