Encourage the birds during National Nest Box Week

Bird box prize giveaway for residents and groups (entries to this giveaway are now closed)

The idea behind the week organised by the British Trust for Ornithology, is to get nest boxes up in local areas, not only to protect the wildlife we already have, but to encourage even more birds to brood in our backyards. The week is an important one for all the birds we have in the UK, from Sparrows to Owls!

As more trees are cut down, birds lose their homes, so putting up boxes is a great way of helping our winged friends - and it's thought there are now between five and six million boxes across the UK!

For your chance to win a free bird box please email [email protected] with your full contact details before the 12th February. Winners will be notified on the 13th February.

If groups, schools or charities based within Nottinghamshire have a project in mind to support the environment and / or encourage wildlife, the Nottinghamshire EnviroGrant may be able to help. For more information and the application form please email: [email protected]

Don't worry if you've never put up a bird box before, an information sheet will be posted with your box and there are lots of hints, tips and monitoring advice available at the official National Nest Box Week website.

If you’d prefer to re-use wood and make your own nest box the RSPB have an easy to follow guide:http://www.rspb.org.uk/makeahomeforwildlife/advice/helpingbirds/nestboxes/smallbirds/making.aspx
