Nottinghamshire - Materials Recovery Facility

Veolia nottinghamshire mansfield materials recovery facility

Information on Mansfield Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)

A Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is where recyclable materials that are collected from households are sorted into different types (e.g. plastics, cardboard, paper, metal) using a mixture of manual and automated methods. When the materials have been sorted they are sent to reprocessors and manufacturers where they are used to create new products.

It is important to have a MRF to sort mixed materials and to ensure that we can remove anything that is not recyclable. The process also helps to provide quality recyclables that manufacturers need to make certain products and goods. If they could not rely on the quality of the recyclables they would need to use more raw materials.

Veolia Nottinghamshire operates a £14 million Materials Recovery Facility in Forest Town, near Mansfield, central Nottinghamshire. It has the capacity to sort 85,000 tonnes of Nottinghamshire’s recyclable waste each year and contributes significantly towards achieving the county’s ambitious recycling targets.

The state of the art technology ensures that Nottinghamshire’s household waste is separated into cardboard, newspapers and magazines, mixed paper and card, aluminium, ferrous (magnetic) metals and plastic bottles. The technology enables us to bulk up the separated waste and put it back into manufacturing so that it can be recycled.

The MRF features a small education room and a dedicated visitor's walkway and viewing platform, where visitors can observe the day-to-day operation of the facility. Our Waste Awareness Officer can arrange educational tours at the MRF for small groups of adults and children (minimum age of 7).
