Jim, who works on the 4Delivery contract in Crawley was named overall winner of Staff Photographer of the Year Competition, beating off competition from 1,000 entries submitted by 150 employees. He also won the Water Wildlife section of the competition, which is sponsored by Veolia Environnement.
Jim's image of a seabird landing on water won him a trophy and £250, plus a framed print of his winning entry. Entries were shortlisted by a professional photographer from Packshot Studio and the Natural History Museum's Photo Studio Manager Jonathan Jackson.
Winner Jim, who lives in Beech Road, Epsom Downs, had only just sat down from receiving the Water Wildlife category prize when the overall winner was announced.
"I was totally speechless; it took a couple of seconds for the announcement to sink in before collecting the award. Winning this award in such an iconic location is very special to me and I am extremely proud of my achievement."
Jim describes himself as a hobby photographer and enjoys capturing sporting events, including skiing and hot air ballooning.
"I have taken many images, some good, some bad and some indifferent but, the first time I saw the winning image on the view screen on the camera I thought it was a stunning image," he added.
Jim and the other winners enjoyed afternoon tea at the Museum and then had a guided tour of the professional wildlife shots on display at Veolia Environnement's Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, which is on display at the Museum until March 2012.
