Go green this Halloween!

Halloween is frightening enough but the amount of waste that can be created from Halloween parties and festivities is even scarier! A shocking one million pumpkins are sold for Halloween each year and the majority of these end up in the black bin. Fear not, Veolia Environmental Services and Sheffield City Council are on hand to make sure you have a green Halloween.

The flesh of pumpkins can be used to make many delicious recipes such as pumpkin lasagne, pumpkin soup or pumpkin pie. The seeds can be roasted and sprinkled on salads or your pumpkin soup! Alternatively, your pumpkin can be composted at home to produce a nutrient rich food for your garden.

The Veolia ‘pumpkins’ and Clive the compost bin will be on hand to show you how to make the most of your pumpkin this year during Fright Night on Sunday 27 October (in the Winter Garden) and also on Angel Street (opposite Primark) on Tuesday 29 October. Come along to pick up a recycling goody bag, a ‘Have a Green Halloween’ guide and have a go at our spooktacular lucky dip to be in with a chance to win a pumpkin!

Veolia’s very own Kate the Pumpkin said: “Every year thousands of pumpkins are thrown away after Halloween. It’s such a waste because they can be turned into delicious soups or recycled into compost. The compost can even be used to grow pumpkins for the following year! Go on Sheffield…let’s have a Green Halloween this year!”

Here are some handy tips for a green Halloween;

• Avoid using disposable plates and cutlery if you are having a Halloween party.
• Save on packaging by making your own treats such as cakes and biscuits.
• Vamp up your house with some ghoulish puppets made from rubbish such as bottles and cardboard.
• Looking for a fancy dress costume? Take a trip down to the charity shop and see what your imagination can create!
