Have fun in the sun and ‘recycle’ this bank holiday!

Whether you are planning a family BBQ, tidying the garden or having a clear out at home over the bank holiday weekend, Veolia and Sheffield City Council would like to remind residents that their Waste and Recycling Services will operate as normal over the bank holiday weekend.

August bank holiday is a great opportunity to sit back in the garden to enjoy a BBQ, drinks and lots of treats! Make sure you treat your blue bin to all your glass bottles and jars, tins, cans and plastic bottles - don’t forget to include empty sun lotion and after sun bottles. Your blue box should be treated to all your paper and cardboard – not forgetting old holiday brochures and ice lolly boxes! Kerbside collections for the blue bin, blue box and black bin will operate as normal on bank holiday Monday, so don’t forget to put them out!

If you ‘over treat’ your blue bin and box to recycling and you fill them up, you can take any extra recycling to your local recycling site. You can also recycle lots of additional items at your local recycling site - including plastic containers e.g. meat/fruit trays and yoghurt pots; foil and textiles. So if you are planning a sort out of the kids wardrobe (or yours!) over the weekend, make sure you take old school uniforms or last season’s summer clothes to the textile bank to be recycled!

Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Streetscene commented: “If you decide on having a productive bank holiday – maybe a bit of DIY or a sort out in the garden, don’t forget that a wide range of bulky household items can be recycled at any one of the 5 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). The sites can be used to recycle old furniture, garden waste, and electrical equipment including televisions, fridges and freezers. All sites will be open as normal over the bank holiday (10am-6pm) so you can get rid of your waste straight away.”

Residents are also reminded that it is not too late to sign up to our chargeable Garden Waste Recycling Service. If residents sign up by 29th August, they will receive 5 collections for just £27. The call centre (0114 273 4567) is open as usual over bank holiday but will close at 4pm, so give them a call and sign up to the service so you can recycle all that end of season garden waste.

Veolia’s Waste Awareness Team has had a busy summer spreading the word across Sheffield on how to have a ‘Waste Wise’ Summer. The Recycling Road trip will next be heading to Norfolk Park’s Sheffield Fayre for the bank holiday weekend (24th and 25th August) and will finish in Barkers Pool, City Centre on 27th August where fruit smoothies will be handed out as part of a new food waste campaign. Be sure to pay the team a visit for lots of recycling fun and to receive your free recycling goody bag!
