Have you ever wondered where your black bin waste goes once it’s been emptied into the back of one of our vehicles?
Do you know what goes on inside one of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings? If you have any ‘burning’ questions like these, then here’s your chance to get answers and enjoy a fascinating tour behind the scenes of our Energy Recovery Facility.
Sheffield’s ERF burns the waste from residents’ black bins that can’t be recycled. By capturing the heat produced we are then able to provide heating and hot water via our District Energy Network to over 140 buildings in Sheffield’s city centre including City Hall, The Winter Garden, Town Hall, University of Sheffield and Ponds Forge. If that wasn’t amazing enough, the ERF also generates enough electricity to power 22,600 homes, or put another way, enough electricity to boil 14,000 kettles every hour – all by burning your rubbish!
ERF General Manager Guy LeGeyt commented: “For many people, our chimney forms part of Sheffield’s iconic skyline, yet they have very little idea what we actually do here with their waste. This event provides a fantastic opportunity to find out for yourself and see how your waste is turned into heat and electricity for the city. We know from previous years that people find the tours really enjoyable, and come away amazed by what they have seen!”
The full ERF Open Day experience takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and includes:
• A behind the scenes guided tour of the ERF by a technical expert
• An opportunity to visit the control room and see the crane in action
• A chance to sit inside one of our refuse and recycling trucks
• An insight into how we recover energy from waste to produce heat and power
• An opportunity to ask our experts all your waste and recycling questions
Full tours of the facility are available to anyone aged 17 years and over. Younger visitors are able to take part in a shorter version of the tour if accompanied by an adult.
Tours will be running from 9.30am am on Saturday 9th June and must be pre-booked. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Tours are booking up fast so please book now to select your preferred tour.
