Veolia welcomes residents to Sheffield Open Day

Residents are invited to take a look behind-the-scenes at Sheffield’s Energy Recovery Facility on Saturday 15 September. Veolia Environmental Services, operators of the site, will be holding the special Open Day to show how the facility on Bernard Road works and how it makes energy and heat from Sheffield’s non recyclable black bin rubbish.

The event is running from 10am – 3pm and during the day visitors can:

• Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility
• Visit the Control Room • Sit in a refuse collection vehicle
 • Visit our Mobile Exhibition Unit and speak to a member of our Recycling Team

Everyone is welcome to the Open Day on Saturday 15 September but those wishing to have a tour of the facility must book in advance and be 16years and over. Our Open Day tours are very popular so to avoid disappointment, please pre-book your tour today by calling: 0114 273 4567 (and ask to speak to a member of the Communications Team) or email: [email protected]

Residents will be able to test their ‘waste and recycling’ knowledge with a site quiz and younger visitors will have the chance to have a go at competitions to win prizes.

Antony Smith, Plant Manager for Veolia Environmental Services in Sheffield comments: “We think that this is a great opportunity for our local community to come along and explore what happens at our site. We hope that residents will come to meet us and gain an inside view on how we are working on the behalf of Sheffield City Council.”

Sheffield’s Energy Recovery Facility has been built using the latest technology and is designed to maximise the efficient generation of combined heat and power. Designed to handle up to 225,000 tonnes of black bin rubbish each year, the facility helps to save 2.5 tonnes of CO2 every hour and keeps Sheffield’s landfill rate very low.

 Ends.
