Springfield Farm - update

You may be aware that the planned closure date of our site at Wapseys Wood (in 2012) was extended to December 2017.

In order to ensure Wapseys Wood landfill site is restored by 2017, Veolia decided to divert all waste inputs from Springfield Farm there. When Wapseys Wood is nearing completion we will re-open Springfield Farm.

The landfill at Springfield Farm had been 'mothballed' (its reopening deferred indefinitely) for the last 5 years.  Veolia has started to prepare it recently for the construction of containment cells.  A contract for the removal of overburden material (what is currently the top layer of the landfill) started at the end of July and will take approximately 6-7 weeks to complete.  No materials movements on and off site are anticipated during this time and all the preparation work will be contained within the site boundary.

During the winter period we will also be importing clay into the site to use as cell engineering material in the cell construction phase, due to start in Spring 2017.

Veolia will continue to manage and maintain the landfill site at Springfield Farm. Capping and subsoiling of the full cells will still take place as part of the restoration process.  Once the new containment cells are constructed and then filled, they will be restored too.

During the landfill closure period mineral extraction will continue to take place as normal.
