Residual Waste

Your General Waste Collection Service

Black wheeled bins are provided to households in West Berkshire for the disposal of general, non-recyclable waste.

  • Your general rubbish bin is collected every other week
  • Please ensure you put your bin out by 7am on the day of collection
  • Please ensure all waste containers are placed at the edge of your property or at your collection point
  • Please separate your waste. Your black wheeled bin should only contain rubbish that cannot be collected in the recycling scheme
  • Please ensure your bin lid is closed and that there is no excess rubbish left next to the bin. We will not empty bins with open lids or side waste
  • Please do not overload your wheeled bin with heavy items
  • As recycling increases in West Berkshire, the amount of residual waste produced will decrease. As this waste would go to landfill, the reduction of residual waste will play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gases, particularly methane. If the new waste collection were not implemented, not only would greenhouse gases be released into the atmosphere, but government fines would apply to the council for exceeding landfill limits which could also impact council tax payers.

Treating Waste As A Resource

We look to treat our household waste as a resource, getting the most value out of it as possible. By following the waste hierarchy, we aim to minimise the amount of waste that is produced, reuse waste where possible, recycle as much as possible, recover the Energy Recovery that cannot be reused or recycled, leaving landfill as the least favoured option.

With the provision of new services and facilities for recycling and processing waste in West Berkshire, we can increase recycling to 49% and beyond, while reducing landfill by nearly 80%.
