We wish you a Green Christmas - get creative with your wrapping!

Recycling your wrapping paper is tricky because if it is shiny, or there are ribbons, bows or glitter, these materials contaminate the paper recycling. To help reduce festive waste, Veolia South Downs is asking residents to consider using these alternatives to shop bought roll for your Christmas presents.

Things You Can Use as Wrapping Paper

  • Comics and Newspapers.
  • Maps (if you’ve got some old ones lying around that are now out of date.
  • Fabric scraps or pillowcases – especially for larger presents.
  • Plain brown paper, or paper bags, they can be decorated with pens or crayons for a personal touch.
  • Old tins and jars can be spruced up to become safe containers.
  • For the Crafty amongst you, upcycling jumpers that have been felted (or accidentally shrunk in the wash) threaded with ribbon and sewed up at the bottom become a personalised gift bag.
  • And for the semi-Grinch: A rubbish bag. (Just be careful not to leave it by your bin!) With all the festive recycling you may have bags spare, when new they can look shiny and sleek, especially when tied with ribbons.

Allan Key, General Manager for Veolia South Downs commented: “There are so many ideas that can help your pocket as well as the environment, remember to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for a greener and cheaper festive season”
