Competition for food lovers to find the best leftovers recipes

Food Lovers who make meals out of leftovers are being asked to share their favourite recipes in a competition. Veolia Environmental Services and Sheffield City Council are launching a ‘Love Your Leftovers’ recipe competition during National Recycle Week (17-23 June) to encourage residents to reuse leftover food rather than simply throw it away.

Each year we throw away 7.2m tonnes of food and drink from our homes which could have been eaten. Not only is this bad for our pockets, costing the average home £50 a week, but it is bad for the environment too.

The energy used to produce food from farm to fork emits greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change. If we stopped throwing away all this food, we would save around 17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. That is the same as taking 1 car out of every 5 off the road!

All it takes is a little bit of creativity in the kitchen to transform leftovers into a fabulous family meal, which is why we are asking residents to share their favourite leftovers recipes with us. The lucky winner will receive £100 in shopping vouchers, have their recipe cooked and sampled by a live audience during a demonstration at Sheffield Food Festival (19 – 22 September 2013) and have the opportunity to take part in a Taste Real Food UK Masterclass.

The best recipes entered into the competition will also appear in the Love Your Leftovers Sheffield Cook Book which will be available to visitors at Veolia’s stand during the Festival.

To enter the competition, submit the name of your recipe along with the, ingredients, method and a colour photo of the dish along with your name, address and telephone number by posting to Love Your Leftovers Competition, Veolia Environmental Services, Lumley Street, Sheffield S4 7ZJ or by email to [email protected] by no later than Friday 16 August 2013.

Using up your leftovers is just one way of helping reduce the amount of food that we throw away. The mobile information unit will be out in Sheffield throughout Recycle Week to answer any questions that residents may have about managing food waste:

  • Monday 17 June – Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre
  • Wednesday 19 June – Fargate
  • Thursday 20 June – Morrisons, Hillsborough
