Get Composting and watch your Garden Grow!

More than 30% of waste created by the average household could be recycled at home by composting and that’s why Sheffield City Council and Veolia are calling out to Sheffield residents to celebrate National Compost Awareness Week and get composting!

On Saturday 10th May, Veolia’s very own ‘Connie the Compost Bin’ will be joining the Waste Awareness team on Fargate between 10-3pm at their special ‘Composting Surgery’.
The team will be providing practical hints, tips, advice and demonstrations on how to recycle kitchen and garden remains into a valuable composting material.
‘Connie the Compost Bin’ will be handing out free home composting guides as well as packets of seeds for residents to sow in their very own homemade compost! There will be a free prize draw competition to win home compost bins and lots of exciting compost activities to get the whole family involved!
Home composting can be used to recycle a wide range of garden and kitchen waste into a valuable composting material including grass cuttings, dead plants, fruit peelings, vegetable remains and even tea bags! Composting is a fantastic way to reduce the amount of waste thrown in the black bin, help the environment and produce a free supply of compost in the process!
Connie the Compost Bin says “Composting is really easy to do and is something that all the family can get involved with! As well as encouraging residents to give composting a go, we are also urging residents that already have a compost bin to ‘keep’ composting and not give up if it doesn’t work straight away. So go on Sheffield, watch your black bin shrink and your garden grow…get composting!”
Compost bins and a range of accessories are available all year round to Sheffield residents at a reduced cost and make an ideal eco-gift for the person that has ‘everything’. 220ltr compost bins can be collected directly from local charity Heeley City Farm for the fantastic bargain price of just £15.
In addition to home composting, residents can also recycle their garden waste through our chargeable ‘Garden Waste Recycling Service’. Once signed up, you will receive a green bin for garden waste which will be collected every two weeks until November 2014. You can join the service up until August 2014 but the sooner you sign up the more collections you will receive.
