Recycle Week 2017

What goes around comes around: Veolia and Sheffield City Council are encouraging Sheffield to look and feel
good this Recycle Week

  • New Recycle Now research reveals that up to 48% of recyclable items from the bathroom are

evading the recycling bin!

  • If everyone in Sheffield recycled one more shampoo bottle, this would save enough energy topower a typical primary school for 6.5 weeks

Whether your bathroom regime is a quick shower or a two-hour makeover, Veolia and Sheffield City Council are
teaming up with Recycle Now this Recycle Week to encourage residents to feel good as well as looking good by
recycling bathroom items like empty shampoo and fragrance bottles.

In the UK, we recycle almost 90% of packaging from our kitchens, whilst in our bathrooms that figure drops
dramatically to only 52%. New research from Recycle Now also found that over a third (38%) of the UK
population say they don’t always recycle aftershave and perfume bottles after they are empty.

This Recycle Week, Veolia and Sheffield City Council are asking residents to rethink their bathroom routines by
highlighting the benefits of recycling more for Sheffield and demonstrating that what goes around comes around!

Glass bottles, including fragrance bottles can be recycled over and over again without any loss of quality, and
the majority are recycled back into new glass bottles and jars, even new fragrance bottles – what goes around
comes around.

Recycling plastic bottles, including shampoo bottles and bathroom cleaners, uses considerably less energy than
required for producing new products from scratch - 75% less in fact, meaning the impact on the environment is
lowered. By recycling your plastic bottles you help to turn them into something new such as a t-shirt, fleece,
furniture, children’s toys or another plastic bottle!

“We’re motivating Sheffield to look good and feel good this Recycle Week! From the last spritz of perfume to the
final squeeze of a shampoo bottle – in Recycle Week add recycling to your bathroom regime, because recycling
just a few more items from around the house can make a real difference.” Said Debbie Doohan, Veolia General
Manager in Sheffield.

Linda Crichton, Head of Recycle Now, said: “Many of us have our daily bathroom routines in place - whether
we’re getting ready to go to work, out for a party, or just settling down for a night in. During Recycle Week, we
are looking to shake up those routines and let people know that they can do good for the environment you live in
in the process of looking good. One tip is to put a recycling bag or bin in your bathroom or bedroom to make
recycling an easy part of your routine”

Recycle Now’s top bathroom recycling tips:

  • Where possible empty and rinse containers before they go in the recycling bin
  • Leave the tops on your plastic bottles when recycling. Pump dispensers (e.g. on hand soap) should be placed in your black bin
  • Mirrors and nail varnish bottles are not recyclable and should be put in your general waste

In Sheffield it’s easy to recycle from home with your blue bin and blue box. Put your glass bottles and jars, cans and plastic bottles in one container, and your paper and card in your other container.
