Taste “Moor” and Waste Less this Bank Holiday Weekend at the Sheffield Food Festival

Sheffield City Council and Veolia are asking residents to turn their leftover food into delicious meals or vegetable patch-loving compost in a bid to reduce the impact food waste has on the environment.

Veolia’s Waste Awareness Team will be hosting a stand at the Food Festival, which takes place in Sheffield between 24 and 26 May, with information for people to learn hints and tips about reducing food waste and how to compost your leftovers and make your garden greener. You’ll find them just behind the Festival Kitchen from 10am-5pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday and Monday.
Visitors can pick up a goodie bag which includes a ‘Love Your Left Overs’ recipe book and Love Food Hate Waste guide to help reduce waste and save money. There will also be a competition to win £25 Lakeland vouchers and two family cinema passes to Cineworld. Entrants simply need to share their top tips for reusing their leftover food.
Debbie Doohan, General Manager from Veolia, said: “It’s shocking to think that only half of the food that we throw away is actually waste, the rest is perfectly good food that could still be eaten. Come down and visit our stall this weekend to learn more on how you can turn your leftovers into a delicious meal.”
In the UK we throw away 7.2 million tonnes of food waste every year costing the average family over £50 every month*. That’s two trips to the cinema for a family of four, including the popcorn.
While food waste costs the average family over £600 a year, it also has an impact on the environment. If we stopped throwing this good food away it would save the equivalent of at least 17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, the same as taking 1 in every 5 cars off our roads*.
Between 2007 and 2012 food waste reduced by 21 per cent in the UK, saving 23 million wheelie bins worth of waste. But there’s much more that can be done by making simple changes. So visit Veolia’s Team this weekend to find out more.
