Five things you can do to protect our oceans

In celebration of World Oceans Day in Nottinghamshire

Our oceans are becoming increasingly polluted from human activities and it is damaging our marine ecosystems. Rubbish is now a common site in the sea and this year for World Oceans Day we want to raise the awareness for recycling and what you can do to help protect our blue planet.

Five things you can do to protect our oceans

1. Take part in a beach clean, river clean or street clean

Picking up any litter you come across on walks in your area will have a big impact, and if you don't come across any recycling bins on your route you can take any recyclable items back with you to put in your household bin.

2. Ditch the disposable and go reusable

Use a reusable water bottle or coffee cup to minimise your waste, this will also save you money in some coffee shops!

3. Go the extra mile with recycling

Whilst lots of items can be recycled in your household bin, you may have to take a trip to your local reuse and recycling centre in order to get items recycled. Don't forget many recycling centres take cooking oil, engine oil and paints so don't pour them down your drain!

4. Check what can be recycled

It's more important than ever to know what can and cannot go in your recycling bin. If you're ever stuck download the Nottinghamshire recycles information guide for all the details.

5. Talk it out with friends

The best way to raise awareness of our oceans and how you can help is to discuss recycling with friends and family!
