Veolia have worked with convenience retailer, One Stop, to recycle 11,000 plastic flower buckets from stores, saving 1.45 tonnes of CO₂. The plastic was recycled into new products, including a bench, which was unveiled and donated to the local community by One Stop as part of the celebrations for their 1000th store opening.

00:00:59:16 - 00:01:00:15
Hi, I'm Sophie

00:01:00:15 - 00:01:03:24
Edwards, National Account Manager at Veolia, and I'm joined by Jenna Chambers.

00:01:04:11 - 00:01:05:14
We're going to be discussing

00:01:05:14 - 00:01:08:07
our new collaborative recycling project in more detail.

00:01:08:14 - 00:01:10:20
But first, Jenna, would you like to introduce yourself?

00:01:11:12 - 00:01:13:05
Great to chat to you today, Sophie.

00:01:13:05 - 00:01:15:23
In my role as customer and sustainability manager,

00:01:16:04 - 00:01:19:06
I'm really excited to work with you at Veolia on this project.

00:01:20:09 - 00:01:21:01
Brilliant Jenna.

00:01:21:01 - 00:01:22:09
Thank you for the introduction.

00:01:22:09 - 00:01:25:16
Let's get stuck into some questions regarding the milk bottles

00:01:25:24 - 00:01:28:16
and obviously the project that One Stop has started.

00:01:28:17 - 00:01:33:11
One stop is aiming to recycle 380,000 milk bottles per year from One Stop stores.

00:01:33:19 - 00:01:36:18
Could you tell us a bit more about how this is going to work at store?

00:01:37:07 - 00:01:39:16
So within stores, we use a lot of milk bottles for either

00:01:39:16 - 00:01:41:24
staff refreshments or from the milk we put into our

00:01:42:00 - 00:01:43:07
vending machines in stores.

00:01:44:08 - 00:01:46:12
So recycling these is really important for us.

00:01:46:12 - 00:01:48:17
What we, we take them and we flatten them and bag them up

00:01:48:17 - 00:01:50:23
separately to return to our distribution centers

00:01:50:23 - 00:01:52:04
along with the other recyclables,

00:01:52:04 - 00:01:54:11
including plastics and cardboard that we spring back.

00:01:55:06 - 00:01:58:13
These are then collected by Veolia and the recycling journey kind of starts there,

00:01:58:13 - 00:02:00:21
so they're washed, shredded and turned into pellets,

00:02:00:21 - 00:02:03:01
which can then be blown straight back into new milk bottles.

00:02:03:09 - 00:02:04:04
Amazing.

00:02:04:04 - 00:02:05:19
So we've got closed loop.

00:02:05:19 - 00:02:07:17
Absolutely. Brilliant.

00:02:07:17 - 00:02:10:14
So I understand that One Stop in the beginning was putting the milk bottles

00:02:10:14 - 00:02:12:19
into the general waste. Yes, that's correct.

00:02:13:02 - 00:02:15:23
So it's brilliant that you've now diverted that into mixed recycling

00:02:16:14 - 00:02:19:07
and then obviously the milk bottle could then be used again at the end process

00:02:19:07 - 00:02:21:09
and sold back to your stores, which is great to see.

00:02:22:10 - 00:02:22:22
What would be

00:02:22:22 - 00:02:25:18
the impact of this move in terms of carbon emissions.

00:02:25:22 - 00:02:29:01
So how will it contribute towards One Stops net zero strategy?

00:02:30:01 - 00:02:33:24
So our ambition is to have carbon neutral operations by 2035 across

00:02:34:00 - 00:02:38:22
scopes one and two and net zero for our full value chain by 2050 across scope three.

00:02:39:14 - 00:02:43:15
By focusing on reducing waste sent to energy from waste and increasing recycling,

00:02:43:16 - 00:02:45:22
this helps to reduce our scope three carbon emissions,

00:02:46:14 - 00:02:48:16
while also replacing the need for raw materials, saving

00:02:48:17 - 00:02:51:06
67% of carbon emissions at the same time.

00:02:52:13 - 00:02:55:07
Thanks for expanding on One Stop's carbon reduction plans

00:02:55:07 - 00:02:58:12
and the targets you've set for 2035 and 2050.

00:02:58:17 - 00:03:01:19
How does this fit into One Stop's wider sustainability plans?

00:03:02:10 - 00:03:06:02
So minimising waste is a real key pillar in our sustainability strategy.

00:03:06:13 - 00:03:09:15
We're committed to increasing recycling across all of our operations

00:03:09:21 - 00:03:12:15
and diverting as much waste from landfill as we possibly can,

00:03:12:15 - 00:03:15:03
as well as reducing the amount of packaging

00:03:15:03 - 00:03:18:00
we put onto the market and working to ensure that packaging

00:03:18:00 - 00:03:19:24
is easily recyclable for our customers

00:03:19:24 - 00:03:22:10
because we appreciate the challenges that that does bring for them.

00:03:23:06 - 00:03:26:13
So far, we've recycled over 20,000 plastic flower buckets

00:03:26:13 - 00:03:29:10
and some of this plastic has been turned into items such as benches

00:03:29:20 - 00:03:32:04
which we’ve then been able to give back to our local communities.

00:03:33:00 - 00:03:34:23
It's been a really fabulous project to work on.

00:03:36:00 - 00:03:37:24
Food waste continues to be a key for One Stop

00:03:37:24 - 00:03:40:11
and across the retail sector, and it is front and centre

00:03:40:11 - 00:03:42:20
of our customers minds in terms of sustainability.

00:03:43:03 - 00:03:45:24
And we are working closely with Too Good To Go and Olio

00:03:45:24 - 00:03:48:22
to reduce food waste across the communities that we do serve.

00:03:49:17 - 00:03:52:04
What are the main challenges for becoming more sustainable

00:03:52:04 - 00:03:55:04
in the retail convenience sector and how are the partnerships

00:03:55:04 - 00:03:58:21
like the one between One Stop and Veolia helping to overcome these?

00:03:59:24 - 00:04:03:15
So the current fluidity of legislation is of course a challenge that we're working

00:04:03:15 - 00:04:07:22
closely with industry experts, such as yourselves to align to. Legislation

00:04:07:22 - 00:04:11:04
often doesn't consider the size of store and the back of house capacities,

00:04:11:16 - 00:04:14:15
and with our stores being below 3000 square foot

00:04:14:15 - 00:04:18:02
, accommodating some of the requirements can be quite an operational challenge.

00:04:19:07 - 00:04:19:23
For our customers

00:04:19:23 - 00:04:23:15
the cost of living crisis has made it increasingly difficult for themselves

00:04:23:15 - 00:04:26:20
to purchase sustainable products which are often more expensive.

00:04:27:13 - 00:04:30:21
It's really essential that retailers do support customers with these affordable

00:04:30:21 - 00:04:34:01
products and help support reduction in costly food waste,

00:04:34:01 - 00:04:37:14
which, as I've said, is we know the most sustainable issues to our customers.

00:04:38:13 - 00:04:40:10
Partnerships such as the one between One Stop and

00:04:40:10 - 00:04:43:02
Veolia help to raise awareness of the circular economy

00:04:43:03 - 00:04:45:20
and give confidence back to communities that we are doing

00:04:46:04 - 00:04:48:14
as much as we possibly can in their best interest.

00:04:49:16 - 00:04:51:17
Looking back on 2023 so far,

00:04:51:24 - 00:04:54:18
what has been some of One Stops other key highlights?

00:04:55:15 - 00:05:00:18
So working with yourselves, we've powered 192 houses per year from electricity

00:05:00:18 - 00:05:04:08
from our waste, we’ve recycled 27,000 tonnes of scrap metal

00:05:04:21 - 00:05:09:00
and in addition we've donated 800,000 meals via Olio and local food banks.

00:05:11:02 - 00:05:11:10
What's

00:05:11:10 - 00:05:13:19
next for One Stops sustainability journey?

00:05:14:12 - 00:05:18:08
So across our transport and property strategies, we've got some exciting plans

00:05:18:08 - 00:05:21:16
in place, including electrified electricity reduction projects,

00:05:22:07 - 00:05:24:20
to help us support a move to low carbon emissions, with some asset

00:05:24:20 - 00:05:28:07
replacement plans and fuel saving across the entire fleet.

00:05:29:13 - 00:05:32:11
Also, how do you engage with your sustainability journey

00:05:32:11 - 00:05:34:01
with your customers?

00:05:34:01 - 00:05:36:15
So this is a really important one to us because often customers

00:05:36:15 - 00:05:38:20
version of sustainability is not the same as ours.

00:05:39:05 - 00:05:43:00
So what we've been doing recently is increasing communications, point of sale

00:05:43:11 - 00:05:46:01
across our digital media to customers to let them know what

00:05:46:01 - 00:05:49:03
we're doing, why we're doing it, and how it helps them.

00:05:50:04 - 00:05:52:04
It's been great working with One Stop over the last

00:05:52:04 - 00:05:55:11
18 months producing benches from flower buckets for your 1,000th store

00:05:55:11 - 00:05:58:14
and donating another bench to a care home for the King's coronation.

00:05:58:23 - 00:06:01:23
We look forward to seeing what the next part of the partnership will bring.

00:06:02:06 - 00:06:04:16
Thank for your time today, Jenna. I really appreciate it.

00:06:05:16 - 00:06:06:05
That's great.

00:06:06:05 - 00:06:08:09
It's been lovely chatting to you. Thank you.
