Eastbourne hospital building

We’re proud to announce that we’ve been shortlisted for not one, but two awards by the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management.

At Veolia, we’ve been delivering a wide range of services to the NHS for over 50 years, with a focus on cost savings and carbon reductions.

We now deliver on-site energy and facilities management services for:

Over 110 hospitals across the country

That care for 8.1 million in-patients per year

Reducing CO₂ emissions by 120,000 tonnes

What is the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM)?

IHEEM is the UK’s largest professional body dedicated to research, education and the professional development of healthcare engineers and facilities managers, delivering resources to help its members stay up to date on changing regulations and the latest innovations.

The organisation brings healthcare professionals together to learn and network and the Healthcare Estates Conference and Awards is their flagship annual event, attracting over 5,700 delegates in 2023.

The Awards

The Healthcare Estates Awards recognise originality, innovation and quality of delivery from organisations, teams and individuals within the sector.

There are 12 categories this year celebrating everything from product innovations to diversity and inclusion commitments and the winners will be announced at the ceremony at The Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester on Tuesday 8th October.

Healthcare Supplier of the Year

To be shortlisted here showcases the diverse range of services and multi-faceted expertise we can provide and in the last year, our specialist energy teams have delivered wide-ranging decarbonisation programmes at key hospitals, helping them to reach their carbon reduction targets whilst delivering affordable, low-carbon energy efficiency upgrades.

Through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS), a total investment of over £71 million has supported major upgrades at:

  • Eastbourne District General Hospital,
  • Yeovil Hospital,
  • Queen Elizabeth Hospital,
  • Good Hope Hospital and Rotherham Hospital.

Together, these projects will reduce annual carbon emissions by 11,865 tonnes CO₂e.

Eastbourne Hospital

New Build Project of the Year

Working in close partnership with Eastbourne District General Hospital, we successfully completed a £28.2 million energy management contract, guaranteeing carbon savings of over 4,000 tonnes a year.

With PSDS funding, we took an innovative whole building approach that accounted for how the facilities and energy delivery systems interact with each other, while maintaining an indoor environment that enhances patient care.

Upgrades included:

  • Desteaming the energy plant,
  • Installing heat pumps to provide low carbon heat,
  • Improved ventilation systems,
  • Insulation and double glazing installations and
  • The design and build of the UK’s first solar car park in a hospital providing the site with its own renewable energy.
We’re deeply committed to helping the NHS become the world’s first health service to reach carbon net zero by 2045 and we’re very proud that our dedication in doing so has been recognised for these prestigious awards.
We look forward to connecting with the healthcare sector at the conference too, building on over 50 years’ worth of experience in advancing the sustainability of healthcare.
