Cardiff Metropolitan University

Established in 1865, Cardiff Metropolitan University is a global university that operates from three campuses at Llandaff, Cyncoed and Plasgwyn - serving students from over 140 countries worldwide.

The Challenge

The University wanted to increase recycling figures, divert waste from landfill and improve waste management services on its three campuses.

The Solution

To meet the needs of the University’s campuses, Veolia designed a service based around Veolia’s local Treforest depot to minimise initial road transport and vehicle movements.

With the aim of increasing recycling rates the service introduced general waste, mixed recycling, glass and food waste services for all of the University’s sites.

To optimise the service, the University was assigned a local account manager who was available for weekly, monthly or quarterly meetings. This helped with the smooth transition of services and provided a channel for direct interaction.

Regular customer meetings enable the customer to raise any issues with the service and resolve any queries. It is also used as a proactive platform to discuss how Veolia and the University can drive forward with landfill diversion and manage the requirements arising from any new developments on the campuses.

By developing a flexible service Veolia is able to effectively meet the University’s changing needs by managing the increased volume through extra containers, extra waste and routing the trucks to service the new site.

The Results

100% landfill diversion

10% increased recycling rate

Cost savings

  • Immediate response to any issues
  • Customer peace of mind

Veolia has improved recycling and managed significant changes to the waste handling processes on the campuses. By managing the waste from a local Veolia site and having a dedicated Account Manager the University gains through regular direct contact and quick response.

“The continuous development of the University’s waste management strategy has been made easier by Veolia. The relationship between Veolia and Cardiff Metropolitan University has been very good and regular contract meetings enable both parties to liaise effectively.”
