Veolia Water, Costain and MWH joint venture bags British Construction Industry Award prize
Designed and built by 4Delivery, a Veolia Water, Costain and MWH joint venture, this complex and controversial £300m scheme included 11km of tunnels, three new pumping stations, a new wastewater treatment works that treats the 95 million litres of wastewater passing through the works each day to the latest European standards and a new 2.5km outfall that releases the treated wastewater out to sea.
The Judges' commented "The fact that this was delivered successfully and the community is completely satisfied with the outcome is a great credit to all those involved."
The design included extensive landscaping including one of the largest green roofs of its kind in Europe, screening the works from surrounding views. Comprehensive engagement with the local community throughout the project and the adoption of innovative approaches to construction ensured that even vociferous objectors to the project became avid supporters.
John Awdry from Veolia Water, who led the stakeholder engagement team in the JV, emphasised the importance of getting people on board "We knew from the outset that co-operation from stakeholders was key to ensuring the project was delivered on time and budget. However our focus was on building relationships with the community that could be sustained beyond the construction phase and into operation for the benefit of our client."
