Derry supports engineers, and encourages young people through the STEMnet organisation
Previously holding the title of CEA Vice Chairman, Derry was invested as Chairman at a lunch hosted by the organisation's President, Dr. Pete Waterman OBE. He receives the chair from David Gent, Global Engineering Manager of AB Sugar.
Starting his career at sea, Derry Carr spent 25 years in the Royal Navy, he joined as a junior stoker and left as a Marine Engineer Officer (Chief Engineer) of his own warship. Following a corporate move from BP Energy, Derry began working for Dalkia and has been with the energy and utilities management company ever since.
Derry has been heavily involved with the CEA for over a decade. During this time he has championed specific areas of development for the benefit of members and the wider combustion industry. Notably, Derry is responsible for driving the Industrial Gas Accreditation Scheme for industrial gas work - a welcome alternative to the Gas Safe accreditation more commonly associated with domestic and light commercial installations. The first pilot course of the scheme will run later this year.
In his new role Derry is looking forward to pushing the agenda on further issues facing the industry. Commenting on his investiture as Chairman of the CEA, Derry said: "I am delighted to take on this role. The CEA exists to improve the understanding and development of the combustion industry, promoting knowledge and best practice within it".
As a mark of his determination to advance thinking and innovate process in the industry, the first industry conference on boiler house technical risk assessments is scheduled for June.
"It's an important issue", explains Derry. "It covers everyone, from boiler house owners to operators. A risk assessment is a legal requirement so identifying and understanding the potential risks in order to keep staff, visitors and the general public in and around a site safe is an important area for development."
Derry passionately supports engineers, and strives for greater recognition of engineers in society. He also encourages young people through the STEMnet organisation as a STEM's Ambassador.
